Hiking - Walking: Snape Wind Direction: Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: 10 Sea Temperature: Weather: sunny periods Max Speed: Distance Covered:
Our long planned walk at Snape near Aldeburgh/Suffolk fell abit flat really
as our son Dan stayed at home and his girlfriend Jay came but she had a
cold :( We packed a sandwich for lunch and headed the 30 miles up the coast
and arrived at Snape just before dinner with the tide quite high meaning
there were no mud flats out to see the birds.Mag,Jay and I then headed
along the footpath towards Iken church - where we walked earlier in the
year but you can't get very close to the water here for most of the way and
there was no birds to be seen :( Things picked up a little when a kestral
landed in a tree beside us and we saw a curlew in the middle of a field, we
continued as far as the beach at Iken Cliff but the tide was very high we
we had to turn around !!! We then discovered that the footpath behind us
was now covered in water and found out that the usual 2m tide was in fact
4m today and just didn't want to go down !!! We tried but were getting wet
feet so had to make a couple of detours around the feilds :) The wooden
walkway was completely covered in places - one man even took his shoes off
and rolled his trousers above his knees to get through the cold water !!!
Then suddenly hundreds of white birds appeared in the River Alde ahead of
us and it was a huge flock of Avocets - the very birds we had come to see
!!!!!!!! We made it as close to the water as we could walking alongside
flooded paths and were treated to a wonderful display as the Avocets took
to the air and fly around us for ages :) and the sun even managed to show
it's face !!! Then it was back to the van for a late lunch before heading
over to Orford Quay to see the sunset :)
So it turned an okay day in the end even if Dan didn't come and Jay was
under the weather :(
